I check the concrete, the cut line and what's around it before pricing anything.

How do you cut through concrete without cracking the rest?

Concrete cutting in Fargo means sawing clean openings, trenches and straight lines into concrete that's already in place with diamond-blade saws, or coring a round hole with no cracking around it. You end up with a neat edge where you'd otherwise have broken, uneven concrete.

Most cutting calls come from someone who needs to get through concrete without tearing all of it out, for a drain trench in a basement floor, a doorway in a foundation wall or a cracked section of driveway that has to go. The price moves with where the cut is, how deep it goes and how much steel is inside, and the schedule turns on what has to happen before the saw starts, like the scan and, for a wall opening, the engineer's plan. Your own figure comes after I've walked the cut with you and put the scope in writing.

How our concrete cutting jobs run

Tell us first whether the cut is in a floor or a wall, because that decides the saw. Floors, driveways and sidewalks get a flat saw that runs along the slab, walls get a wall saw that rides on a track fixed to the concrete, and round holes for pipes or vents get cored. Before any blade goes in, we scan for steel and wiring so we know where the rebar, the steel bars that hold a slab together, and any live lines run, and we lay the cut out around them. For a new opening in a wall, we wait for the engineer's plan before we cut, then we saw the lines, clean up and go over the edges with you.

Cutting is often the first step of a bigger job. We saw out a damaged section so a new concrete driveway ties into what's left, cut back an old slab to make room for a concrete patio, and on a fresh pour we cut the control joints, shallow grooves that give the slab a planned place to crack.

Concrete cutting in Fargo near sidewalks and driveways

A lot of the cutting we do in Fargo touches the front of the lot, like sawing out a strip of sidewalk or cutting back an edge to widen a driveway, and the city has rules there you'll want to know. The City of Fargo requires anyone installing or repairing sidewalk to be licensed with the city as a sidewalk contractor and to hold a North Dakota general contractor's license, and unlicensed sidewalk or approach work, the stretch of driveway between the street and the sidewalk, can bring a $500 fine plus removal of the work, with the cost added to your property taxes as a special assessment. The city also sets how narrow and how wide a driveway can be where it meets the sidewalk, and going past the usual maximum takes the City Engineer's approval, so before we cut back an edge we check your new width against the city's driveway approach rules.

Inside the house, most of what we cut here is basement and garage floors opened up for drain and plumbing lines, plus the odd new door or window in a foundation wall. We're based in Fargo and take the same kinds of calls in West Fargo, Moorhead and the cities around them.

Why call us for concrete cutting

  • I walk every cut myself

I come out to look at each job and write the estimate, then our crew lead runs the cut on site while I check in. You're dealing with the person who priced the job, so what's on paper is what happens.

  • Licensed and fully insured

North Dakota requires anyone doing a job over $4,000 to hold a state contractor license. We're licensed and fully insured, and I'm glad to show you both when I come out.

  • Planned in order since 2017

I've run this business since 2017, after years scheduling jobs for a building company, so I line up the scan and any engineer's plan before the saw is booked. That way the crew shows up to cut, not to wait.

Frequently asked questions

How much does concrete cutting cost in Fargo?

Saw cutting an accessible concrete slab usually runs about $4 to $10 per linear foot across the US, so treat that as a national figure, not a Fargo quote. Wall sawing and thicker or steel-filled slabs cost more per foot, and a small job may be priced mostly on the charge to bring the crew and saw out rather than on the footage. Your own number comes from the estimate after I've seen the cut.

How do I get a new door opening cut into a concrete wall?

Start with a structural engineer, because a new opening in an existing wall most often needs one before anyone cuts. The engineer sets the opening's size, where it goes and whether it needs a lintel, a beam across the top, since an opening in a wall that carries weight changes how it holds the load. We cut to that plan once it's in hand.

How long after pouring a new concrete slab should the joints be cut?

Saw cuts that control cracking should typically be made within 4 to 12 hours after the slab is placed, with temperature and weather deciding where in that window it falls. If they're cut late, the slab picks its own crack lines, so plan the saw alongside the pour.

When do I call 811 before digging in North Dakota?

Call 811 at least two business days before you dig, which North Dakota law requires, and utility crews will come mark the underground lines. The marks are good for 21 days from your planned dig date, so time the call to when the trench actually gets dug out after the cut.

Does concrete cutting include hauling away the pieces?

Not always, because sawing concrete and removing it are separate jobs, and some cutters saw the lines and leave the panels where they lie. Ask before you book, and I spell out in the written scope whether breaking out and hauling is in it.

How do I keep concrete cutting slurry out of the storm drain?

Ask the crew upfront whether they'll vacuum and contain the slurry, the wet mix of water and concrete dust a saw throws off. Raw slurry running into a storm drain counts as an environmental violation in many areas, so it's worth settling before the saw starts.

  • Concrete driveway building

If cutting out a cracked or sunken section shows the rest of the driveway is past saving, we dig out, pack a new base and pour a fresh one.

  • Concrete patio construction

When you're adding outdoor space beside a slab we've cut back, we pour a patio on a packed base with joints placed where cracks should go.
